Wise Children — HaDivadlo, Brno

Twin sisters Dora and Nora Chance receive an invitation to the 100th birthday celebration of their father Melchior Hazard - a famous Shakespearean actor who denied their existence throughout his life. This sets in motion a story of two retired musical theatre singers and dancers, who together span nearly two centuries. At the family celebration, they reminisce with wit about backstage tales filled with romantic twists and scandals, while layers of time overlap and interweave.

The source is the novel "Wise Children" (1991) by British writer Angela Carter (1940-1992), a key figure of magical realism whose work remains relatively unknown in the Czech context. Carter gradually infuses reality with dream elements and opens space for a carnival atmosphere. The novel confronts high and low art - Shakespeare, musical theatre, cabaret - and hedonistically portrays theatre communities and artistic circles across 20th-century England.

The Czech premiere will be directed by Kamila Polívková, a regular collaborator with HaDivadlo, working with the theatre's ensemble.
