Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852) was a Russian writer and playwright of Ukrainian origin, one of the most important figures in 19th-century Russian literature. He is best known for his satirical works, including the play The Government Inspector (Revizor) and the prose poem Dead Souls, which expose bureaucracy and corruption in tsarist Russia.
