Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852) was a novelist, playwright, and satirist of Ukrainian origin who wrote in Russian and reshaped the course of 19th- and 20th-century Russian literature. He grew up in the Poltava region, absorbing the Cossack folklore that colours his early Ukrainian story cycles. His comedy The Government Inspector (1836) and the novel Dead Souls (1842) dissect bureaucratic corruption and moral hollowness with grotesque precision, and their influence on Dostoyevsky and generations of writers after him is hard to overstate.
