Michael Tarant

About

Michael Tarant (born 8 February 1953, Prague) is a Czech theatre director with over four decades of work spanning drama and opera. After graduating from the Prague State Conservatory in 1977, he began as an assistant director at the National Theatre and went on to lead drama ensembles in Pardubice, Ostrava, Hradec Králové, Kladno and Olomouc. He has more than 200 productions to his name and has worked abroad in Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Sweden and Spain. He also teaches at conservatories in Prague and at JAMU in Brno.

    Tarant prepared a new production of Bizet's Carmen at the Silesian Theatre in Opava for the theatre's 220th anniversary; the premiere took place on October 19, 2025.

    In April 2024, Tarant's production of Smetana's opera The Kiss premiered at the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec, praised by critics for its convincing stage interpretation.
