Matej Benko

About

Matej Benko (born 28 July 1979) is a Slovak pianist and composer based in Prague, widely regarded as one of the central figures of the Czech-Slovak jazz scene. He studied composition at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and leads his own trio, quartet and quintet, performing mainly original works that blend modern jazz with Latin rhythms, fusion and European melodic writing. His cross-genre collaborations include Richard Müller, Dan Bárta, Michal Horáček and Ondřej Ruml. His 2015 solo album Planety featured a different Czech or Slovak pop-rock star on each track, one per planet of the solar system.
