
Kafka Band Plays Kafka
A musical-literary project transforming Franz Kafka's works into alternative rock. The band will perform selections from all three of their albums inspired by Kafka's novel fragments.
Jaroslav Rudiš (born 1972 in Turnov) is a Czech writer, screenwriter and musician who works in both Czech and German, splitting his time between Bohemia and Berlin. He rose to prominence with his debut novel Nebe pod Berlínem (2002) and the cult graphic novel trilogy Alois Nebel (with Jaromír 99), adapted as an animated film in 2011. He co-founded the literary-musical project Kafka Band, which sets Kafka's prose to alternative rock, and has received awards including the German Prize of the Houses of Literature (2018), the Karel Čapek Prize (2022), and the Czech Medal of Merit (2024).
In October 2025, Rudiš presented a Czech translation of his book Gebrauchsanweisung für Bier titled Návod na použití piva at the Nymburk brewery.
Rudiš performed at the Filmová renesance Slavonice festival with a performance at the intersection of reading, concert, and frenzied speech accompanied by guitarist Petr Kružík from the band Priessnitz.
In an interview for iROZHLAS in January 2025, Rudiš commented on the political atmosphere in eastern Germany.
President Petr Pavel awarded Rudiš the Medal for Merit I degree on October 28, 2024, for his contribution to culture and art.
In May 2024, the Labyrint publishing house released a new edition of Rudiš's debut Nebe pod Berlínem simultaneously with an EP by the band U-Bahn.
