EXPOSITION OF NEW MUSIC
The 38th Ars Spectrum festival in Brno (October 3-8) surveys spectral music from its origins to contemporary experiments in algorithmic composition and AI-guided improvisation.
Fausto Romitelli (1963-2004) was an Italian composer and one of the key figures of spectral music at the turn of the millennium. He trained at the Milan Conservatory and with Franco Donatoni in Siena, later studying in Paris at IRCAM and alongside the founders of Ensemble L'Itinéraire (Grisey, Murail, Dufourt). His music fuses spectral sound analysis with the aesthetics of psychedelic rock, noise and electronics. He died of cancer at 41, shortly after completing his defining work, the video-opera An Index of Metals.
The opera Index of Metals was premiered on October 3, 2026 in Brno by the Brno Contemporary Orchestra in the underground garages near Bobycentra.
The American music magazine The Tonearm described new recordings of the work Index of Metals as evidence that Romitelli's music has definitively become part of the contemporary classical repertoire.
A new live recording of Index of Metals was released on the Kairos label, performed by the AltreVoci Ensemble with singer Livvia Rado under the direction of Marco Angia.
The work Index of Metals was also studied by the Roman ensemble PMCE Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble under the direction of Tonino Battista for performance at Auditorium Parco della Musica.
The French label B Records released a new recording of Index of Metals performed by the Ensemble Miroirs Étendus with singer Linda Oláh.
