Sir Antonio Pappano (born 1959 in Essex) is an English-Italian conductor and pianist who became Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in September 2024. Before that he spent 22 years as Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden - the longest tenure in that institution's history - and led the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome from 2005 to 2023. His discography of more than 130 recordings spans Italian opera, Wagner and late-Romantic symphonies.
The Royal Opera House Covent Garden appointed Pappano as its first Conductor Laureate - a title honoring his 22 years of service and more than 700 performances.
Pappano returned to the Covent Garden stage after a year to conduct a new production of Wagner's Die Walküre directed by Barry Kosky.
The LSO announced the program for Pappano's second season as chief conductor (2025/26): British music, American symphonic works, Shostakovich symphonies, and a concert performance of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde.
Pappano became an honorary member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
The LSO performed at Milan's La Scala with Pappano, presenting works by Berlioz, Strauss, and Mozart.
