About

Ana Sokolović (born 1968 in Belgrade) is a Serbian-Canadian composer based in Montreal since 1992, whose music draws on Balkan folk rhythms and crosses into theatre, dance, and visual art. Her a cappella opera Svadba (2011), written for six female voices, has been staged more than fifty times worldwide - at Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence among others. She has won two consecutive JUNO Awards for Classical Composition of the Year (2019, 2020) and since 2022 holds the first Canada Research Chair in Opera Creation at the Université de Montréal.

    Sokolović composed the required work Two Studies for Piano (Magla | Igra) for the semi-final of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in May 2025.

    The Toronto Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Gustava Gimena performed Sokolović's Concerto for Orchestra (November 16-17, 2024) - for the first time in TSO's history.

    The film version of the opera Svadba won the Prix Digital Opera Awards in the Artistic Creation category, announced on December 4 in New York.
