Jihlava Zoo sits in the valley of the Jihlávka stream, a short walk from the city centre. It gained zoo status in 1982 and today houses around 1,500 animals of some 260 species, with a focus on big cats, primates and reptiles. It holds the largest collection of marmosets and tamarins in the Czech Republic and participates in European conservation breeding programmes. Between 2011 and 2015 the zoo underwent a major expansion - the Zoo of Five Continents project - adding themed areas from the African Savanna to a Tropical Pavilion.
