Museum of Puppet Cultures in Chrudim

Chrudim

About the venue

The oldest and largest puppet museum in the Czech Republic has been housed since 1972 in the Renaissance Mydlář House, built in 1573-1576. The collection grew from the private holdings of Prof. Jan Malík and now runs to over 50,000 objects, including more than 8,500 puppets from Bohemia and around the world. The permanent exhibition Magický svět loutek (Magical World of Puppets) takes visitors from travelling puppeteers' marionettes and Spejbl & Hurvínek to shadow puppets from Indonesia and Vietnamese water puppets. Czech puppetry has been on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2016.
