Schools - Medieval Art and Literature
An educational programme for secondary schools exploring the relationship between medieval visual art and literature - how these fields were interconnected, what literary genres emerged in the Middle Ages, and how they were reflected in visual expression. Through readings of medieval texts, students will discover the literature of the period and medieval worldview in its cultural and historical context.
The programme explains the symbolism of medieval visual language and demonstrates how art and literature reflected the historical, spiritual, and social events of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. It engages with specific works and texts: the Vyšebrod Altarpiece, Master Theodoric, the Votive Image of Jan Očko of Vlašim, the Roudnice Madonna, the Reininghaus Altarpiece, Monogramist IP / the Apothecary, the Legend of St. Catherine, Vita Caroli, the Bible, and the Debate of the Soul and Body, among others.
