Kopytem sem, kopytem tam

The protagonists of Věra Chytilová's caustic group portrait are financially secure thirty-somethings who spend their time drinking, joking, and engaging in emotionally uncommitted sexual adventures. Controller Pepe (Tomáš Hanák), veterinarian Dědek (Milan Šteindler), and manager František (David Vávra) enjoy life - until the boisterous Pepe collapses and ends up in hospital. It turns out that one member of the group is HIV-positive, and the previously carefree promiscuity transforms into paranoid dissolution of their friendships.

Chytilová's film condemns not only the moral decay of the late 1980s, but also the incompatible relationships between men and women, one of her key themes. The targets of her criticism are both the rigid official structures and the new, ostentatiously nonconformist generation struggling with boredom, alienation, and spiritual emptiness. She collaborated with members of Prague's Sklep theatre, who brought elements of their distinctive poetics to the story.
