Guided Walk Through Prague's Lagoons

A guided walk led by Barbora Chmelová from the Czech branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) explores the area around the confluence of the Vltava and Berounka rivers, where seemingly ordinary or heavily modified landscapes conceal valuable ecosystems.

The first stop is the Komořanské and Modřanské Ponds nature reserve - one of Prague's youngest specially protected areas. You will learn how a floodplain ecosystem gradually developed on the site of former 19th-century flood-control reservoirs. The route continues along the Vltava cycle path to the Krňák nature reserve, where you can see floodplain forests, wetlands, gravel deposits, and part of the original Berounka riverbed. A stop at the Zbraslav wastewater treatment plant opens the discussion of human impacts on river landscapes and the search for balance between urban functioning and nature conservation.

The total route length is 5 km (can be shortened according to group needs), with an estimated duration of 2-2.5 hours. Bring sturdy footwear (part of the route follows paths off paved roads), water, snacks, and insect repellent if needed. The walk takes place in any weather.
