Bubeneč Against the Flow of Time

A walking tour through Bubeneč - formerly known as Přední Ovenec - traces the history of this Prague neighbourhood, through which royal processions, soldiers, and exiles once passed, and where German and Soviet tanks rolled through on two consecutive days. Today, grand villas stand alongside traces of relentless development from various centuries, while diplomatic missions from both West and East occupy the area.

Guide Jana Nováčková will stop at sites connected to Jan Kotěra, Max Spielmann, and Věra Machoninová, show villas with "open gates," and point out where a Chinese pavilion stood as recently as the 1960s. The tour will also cover the stories of Saint Gothard and Blessed Hroznatý, the difference between a hay loft and a straw loft, how the Industrial Revolution entered the royal hunting grounds, and the fates of Russian émigrés and Czech legionnaires.
