Nový Svět, Romance of Winding Streets

A guided walk with Lenka Liková starting at the statue of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler at the Pohořelec tram stop. The route leads along Loretánská Street across the square to the Loreto and Capuchin Monastery, then down Černínská Street into Nový Svět, ending in front of the Church of St. John of Nepomuk on Kanovnická Street in Hradčany. Approximately 1.5 km, about 2 hours of walking.

Nový Svět emerged in the valley of the Brusnice stream along an old footpath from Břevnov Monastery to Prague Castle. Originally inhabited by poor people bound by service to the castle, cathedral, Loreto, or surrounding palaces - damp, lack of light, no sewage, large families in single rooms. Gradually conditions improved and the poor quarter became a picturesque corner that attracted artists and bohemians.
