Muzeum města Brna is housed in Špilberk Castle, which has overlooked Brno from its hilltop since the 13th century. The castle served as a royal residence before becoming one of the most feared Habsburg prisons in Central Europe. Today it holds permanent exhibitions on the city's history alongside temporary shows, and its casemates - where political prisoners from across Europe were once held - draw visitors year-round.
