Biograf Kotva on Lidická třída is the last classic single-screen cinema in České Budějovice. The building was completed in 1928 to a design by architect Karel Chochola for the Sokol II gymnastics association, and has gone through several name changes since. Today it screens in digital 3D with Dolby Atmos sound and co-organises festivals such as Jeden svět, Tady Vary and the French Film Festival. The attached café with a garden terrace also hosts exhibitions and small concerts.

Over more than five decades Menzel directed over thirty films, many of them now considered cornerstones of Czech cinema. Two awards define his international standing: the Oscar for Closely Watched Trains and the Golden Bear for Larks on a String - films that shaped how the world sees Czech film.

At the Václav Havel Library in Prague on January 24, 2025, a memorial event "Tribute to Jiří Menzel" was held, at which the ambassadress of the Croatian Republic presented the director's wife Olga Menzelová with a state decoration awarded posthumously by President Zoran Milanović.

The artistic association Artes inducted Jiří Menzel posthumously into the Hall of Legends of Entertainment Art at a solemn ceremony on September 25, 2022, at the Lucie Bílá Theater in Prague.

The director's wife Olga Menzelová confirmed on November 9, 2020, that Jiří Menzel died as a result of pneumonia caused by covid-19.

About: Evald Schorm

At one time, Czech director Evald Schorm was known as "the conscience of the Czech New Wave" and was known for using film to promote notions of compassion, equality, and individualism in the face of social structure. Originally an opera singer, the Prague native studied filmmaking at the prestigious F.A.M.U. between 1957 and 1962. He went on to create documentaries with the Documentary Film Studio in Prague. Schorm also worked as a film actor. Following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, the Communist government repressed his films. Still, Schorm remained in Czechoslovakia and directed opera, stage plays, and sometimes television shows. He returned to feature filmmaking in the late '80s, but died of heart failure in 1988.
