Melice – The Story of a Castle, The Story of a Landscape
Kaple a špitálek sv. Anny, Vyškov
The exhibition Melice – The Story of a Castle, The Story of a Landscape is on display in the Chapel of St. Anne at Dukelská Street 6 in Vyškov from November 7, 2025 to September 30, 2026. It was created as part of the project Mysterious Places, which aims to present unique archaeological finds from the collections of museums in the South Moravian Region. The opening reception took place on November 7, 2025 at 5:00 PM.
The exhibition explores the history of the vanished castle Melice, a seat of the Olomouc bishops, and the development of settlement structures at the foot of the Drahanská Highlands from the 11th century to the Hussite settlement in the early 15th century. The castle was built by the Olomouc bishops in the 14th century; its construction prioritized comfort and splendor rather than defensive capability. In the early 15th century it fell victim to the Hussites and was never rebuilt.
Visitors can view a diverse collection of everyday objects, a replica of a brass reliquary cross, glass window panes including stained glass, architectural elements, building ceramics, and unique Gothic tiles from the bishop's chamber of the castle palace. The installation includes a three-dimensional projection of the Pustiměř area and individual sites – the Pustiměř rotunda, the Zelená hora fortification with a reconstruction of the 11th-century hillfort, the castle around 1332, and Hussite settlement. A hologram allows visitors to examine the displayed objects – tiles, vessels, iron items, and fragments of ceramic figurines. Interactive elements include a scribe's desk for trying writing with a quill and ink, a wooden memory game with photographs of archaeological finds, and a Gothic window puzzle.
The exhibition is wheelchair accessible. The Vyškov Museum organizes guided tours of the exhibition with archaeologist Klára Rybářová (dates: April 23, May 12, and June 9, 2026, always at 4:00 PM). Full admission is 60 CZK, reduced admission is 30 CZK.
