Passage: Underpass beneath Brno Main Station

Passage is part of the Medúza collective's long-term project mapping the "grey zones" of public spaces across Czech and Slovak cities. The artists listen to each place and explore what the local environment offers on its own terms. The first part of the series, the theatrical essay Passage: Andrej Hlinka Square, took place at the Stanica cultural centre in Žilina in January 2026, uncovering the memory, history, and social layers of the contentious square in the city centre.

In Brno, the collective focuses on the underpass beneath the main railway station - the so-called "mouse hole" that has been an eyesore for locals and visitors since the 1980s. Thousands of people pass through it daily without paying attention. The Medúza collective decided to spend concentrated time in the underpass, observing its traces and those of its temporary inhabitants, exploring everything that normally escapes human notice.

The project is part of the YOUNGSTERS 2026 programme run by the CO.LABS cultural centre, supporting student and emerging artistic creation. The Medúza collective consists of three theatre studies students at Masaryk University's Faculty of Philosophy - Lea Valentová, Tereza Pašková, and Klára Kubešová - and Tara Ružbašanová, a graduate of puppet theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. In their work they explore relationships between places, work with various principles and media, and approach environments with regard for both human and non-human beings. Their perspective also includes a feminist approach to questions of identity and social structures.

The small hall at co.labs where the performance takes place is fully wheelchair accessible; the building has accessible and gender-neutral toilets. The performance contains vulgarities.
