Mašasušet Group: Stories Written in Calligraphy and Offered

A journey from narrative to drama and back, from gesture to word and back.

Many paths lead to the summit of Mount Lu. To reach your goal, you must choose one of them. As you hurry along and name your path "This path": it seems to you the clearest, most interesting, most beautiful. When you reach the summit, you see all the other paths from there. You begin to laugh at your foolishness and cry out: "My path was certainly not the clearest, and there are many other paths that are far more beautiful!"
Yet still believe that it was The best path: to walk precisely along It was your decision.

Stories Written in Calligraphy and Offered emerge from narratives about masters and disciples of Chan and Zen Buddhism. For the stage, those were selected which suggest that human life is a kind of initiation. Many of these stories were conveyed by Pascal Fauliot in his book Contes des sages zen (Tales of Zen Sages).

The one-hour performance consists of four stories of varying lengths with a common theme: initiation through encounter with art - with the poetry of poet Su Dongpo, with the wise wanderings of an old master, with the work of a court painter or the haiku of monk Bashō.

Rhythm, posture and gesture play a fundamental role in theatre - it is through them that the deepest transformations take place.
