New York in the 1980s is transforming before our eyes - the city promises rapid wealth, yet increasingly becomes entangled in a gray zone of dubious dealings and dangerous connections.

A well-meaning engineer Irwin (Miles Teller), his meticulous wife Hester (Scarlett Johansson), and their two sons live an orderly middle-class life until Irwin's charismatic brother Gary (Adam Driver) appears at their doorstep with an offer of lucrative side work. Is this finally the chance at the American dream they had stopped believing in?

Gary knows well how to navigate unpredictable street waters. But can he recognize in time who he has gotten entangled with this time?
