New York in the 1980s is transforming before our eyes - the city promises rapid wealth, yet increasingly harbors a gray zone of dubious dealings and dangerous connections.

Well-meaning engineer Irwin (Miles Teller), his meticulous wife Hester (Scarlett Johansson), and their two sons live an orderly middle-class life until Irwin's charismatic brother Gary (Adam Driver) appears at their doorstep with an offer of lucrative side work. Could this finally be the chance at the American dream they had stopped believing in?
