When young tutor William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) meets the free-spirited Agnes (Jessie Buckley), a passionate love affair begins, bringing three children into the world. William spends most of his time in London building his theatre career, while Agnes manages the household alone on the English countryside, raising their two daughters and son Hamnet, who dreams of following in his father's footsteps.

The family is struck by tragedy that shakes even their seemingly solid relationship. From darkness and despair, Shakespeare creates his tragedy of Hamlet - opening a path for both him and Agnes to emerge from their grief.
