Josefina Dusk • mc broskvičky — Theatre 29, Pardubice

Musician Josefina Dusk transforms feelings of anxiety, panic and existential dread into playful dystopian, dense techno-pop with manic fairy energy. mc broskvičky is a feminist dada medley of childhood diaries, synthetic dreams and loosely glued nostalgia. Opening the new season at D29! Josefina Dusk's energetic concert show is full of striking costumes, makeup and dance - an original meditation on both the beauty and terror of existence itself.

Josefina began composing music in London, where she spent three years after finishing school. During the pandemic, however, she returned to her native Tábor, where she cared for animals and neighbours, planted trees and devoted herself fully to creating experimental electronics. A trained actress, she enjoys playing with words and often sings in invented languages. Her latest album, méh₂tēr, maps her experience of motherhood and bodily transformation. Raw joy, sleepless nights, tears and laughter - all of it is laid bare here. Josefina uses this opportunity to reflect on her own experience of childbirth - a subject that is both treated mechanically and banally, yet shrouded in some primordial magical mysticism. Are mothers tribal fertility goddesses, or just factories for people? Are they expected to fulfil an archetype, or preserve their own identity? If you "half-close your ears", you can hear all these questions sonically in méh₂tēr - in her distinctive interpretation of sentimental techno ballads, bubbling acid hymns and slightly skewed lo-fi bedroom pop.

Ultimately, it's a love letter to a small creature crawling on its belly like a wounded soldier dodging gunfire in some 1970s war film. Josefina Dusk's performances are, among other things, suited to damp cave revelries and baroque stages. We'll enjoy her bold sci-fi synth-pop at the opening of the new season in the cosy setting of Club 29.
