Following the student comedy "School is the Foundation of Life" (1938), director Martin Frič made another film based on the "student" texts by Jaroslav Žák. "Journey into the Depths of a Student's Soul" (1939) transcended the boundaries of light entertainment through its patriotic tone.
The narrative framework is formed by the notes of a high school physics teacher Rabiska, who studies his students with meticulous dedication over a long period. The center of the story are two protagonists: the sensitive seventh-form student Vaněk (Rudolf Hrušínský), a talented pianist, and the kind elderly naturalist Matulka (Jindřich Plachta), who has not yet passed his state exams due to stage fright.
