The Selva (PT) // Ponava
The Selva is a Portuguese trio composed of Ricardo Jacinto (cello and electronics), Gonçalo Almeida (double bass and electronics), and Pedro Oliveira (drums and electronics). The group operates at the intersection of improvised music, electroacoustics, and minimalism, exploring the tension between the expressive power of acoustic instruments and their electronic manipulation.
The trio was founded in 2016 (originally with Nuno Morão on drums) and has released four albums: The Selva (2017), Canícula Rosa (2019), Barbatrama (2021, in collaboration with Machinefabriek), and Camarão-Girafa (2023). In early 2025, Pedro Oliveira joined the ensemble – a drummer, percussionist, and sound explorer from Barcelona, known for collaborations with Peixe-Avião, Clã, Rui Reininho, and his solo project Krake – replacing Nuno Morão. His distinctive electroacoustic and electronic approach has pushed The Selva into new territories.
