This programme introduces students to the scriptorium – the writing workshop where books were created in the Middle Ages. Participants will learn how, with what, and on what people wrote in the past, and will search for writing in medieval artworks. The programme also includes a practical component: writing with a quill pen and hand-painting illustrations.
Programme objectives:
- Familiarize students with the work of scribes, medieval workshop practices, and the development of writing and scribal tools.
- Explore medieval artworks that reflect these themes in their iconography.
- Develop skills in writing with a quill and calligraphic pen.
Artworks the programme relates to: Vyšebrod Cycle, Master Theodoric: St. Ambrose, St. Gregory the Great, Roudnice Altarpiece, St. James Altarpiece, and others.
