Fifteen-year-old John (Robert Aramayo) faces a life-changing moment when he is diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, marked by uncontrollable vocal and physical tics. Shame prevents him from forming relationships, and the world around him barely knows or understands his condition.
This British film, based on the true story of John Davidson, follows his adolescence as it is suddenly disrupted by harsh alienation from an uncomprehending world. A turning point comes when he meets Dottie (Maxine Peake), an energetic mother of a former classmate, who opens the door to support and understanding. John gradually finds the courage to face his own life — and sometimes even uses his disability with wit to raise awareness.
The film was written, directed, and produced by Kirk Jones. It had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, received five nominations for the British Academy Film Awards, and won two — one of which went to Robert Aramayo for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role.
