Tomáš Kubeš: Indonesia
Měšťanská beseda, Plzeň
A lecture by photographer, journalist, and traveler Tomáš Kubeš (1972) about Indonesia – a land of more than 17,000 islands that still harbors many secrets and peoples living in traditional ways.
Audience members will journey to see orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra, learn about the lives of shamans on the island of Siberut, and walk through the crowded streets of Jakarta. The program also includes Makassar – the gateway to the island of Sulawesi with its ancient burial rituals, snorkeling with whale sharks, and a visit to the Dani tribe in West Papua.
Tomáš Kubeš has traveled to more than 150 countries worldwide. He photographs reportage for numerous magazines (including Lidé a Země and Koktejl) and also works in portraiture, architecture, advertising, and humanitarian photography. His expeditions include a voyage down the Amazon, searching for pygmies in Central Africa, navigating the Congo River, traveling with a camel caravan into the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia, an expedition to South Sudan during the civil war, visits to Somaliland, the Bijagós archipelago, Yakutia, Buryatia, Tuva, and Chernobyl. He currently documents indigenous worlds on the island of New Guinea.
