LiStOVáNí.cz: Love and Body (Arnošt Lustig)

In one of his final works, Arnošt Lustig attempted a definitive reckoning with themes that marked his entire body of work - the incomprehensibility of Nazi ideology aimed at the extermination of Jews on one hand, and love of life and all things physical on the other. The main characters, young people consumed by desire - Gabriela Lágusová and Josef Reinisch - live out their forbidden love in the Theresienstadt ghetto.

Transport could come any day, so the book's heroes find solace only in each other. They live fully and speak things they might never have uttered under other circumstances. They survive as long as they have each other's bodies. The result is a story full of declarations of love and essayistic parables about the meaning of life.

The book was published by Mladá fronta as part of the AL100 project marking what would have been Arnošt Lustig's 100th birthday. Performed by Bára Jánová (alt. Daniela Šišková) and Lukáš Hejlík.
