Trainspotting

Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), the protagonist of Irvine Welsh's cult novel and its equally successful film adaptation, is a heroin addict by choice. His circle of "friends" - Spud, Sick Boy, Tommy, and the sociopath Begbie - share his addiction. Their rebellion against middle-class values is strange and self-destructive, yet they embrace it fully, unaware of its inevitable consequences. But then Renton decides to quit heroin - can a "normal life" offer him the same rush as a proper fix?

The Edinburgh drug scene of the 1980s, gripped by economic crisis, appears in Danny Boyle's second feature film (later followed by The Beach and Slumdog Millionaire) with authentic rawness, which the director balances with dark humour and surrealist touches.

The soundtrack features stars of British guitar and electronic music from the mid-90s - Blur, Primal Scream, New Order, Pulp. The track "Born Slippy. NUXX" by Underworld became a manifesto for an entire generation.
