Waldstein Palace and Garden — Malostranská Metro Station, Prague

A guided walk beginning at the Waldstein Riding School and continuing into the Waldstein Garden with its sculptures and flower beds. The original sculptures from the workshop of Adriaen de Vries were taken from Prague by the Swedes at the end of the Thirty Years' War, but copies and the restoration of the garden beds in the style of Baroque gardens give an impression of how the garden looked in the time of Albrecht von Waldstein - one of the most powerful men in Europe in the 1620s and early 1630s. During the walk, participants will learn more about this significant, though controversial, figure in European history.

The garden features an artificial grotto and salla terrena, decorated with works by Italian artists. The Waldstein Palace itself, now the seat of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, is also the work of Italian builders, stucco workers, and painters.

On the Saturday walk, participants will view several representative rooms of the palace - the Great Hall, Knights' Hall, Antechamber, Audience Hall, and Mythological Corridor. Commentary on the interior decoration will take place in the courtyard, as the relatively small spaces do not allow for group tours inside.

Warning: in case of heavy rain, the garden may be closed to the public, and the walk would be cancelled in such circumstances.
