Trees Die Standing
Bolka Polívka Theatre – White House, Brno
Alejandro Casona, a successful Spanish playwright, tells the story of how the world can be more beautiful when we leave room for fantasy, kindness, and humour.
The main character is a grandmother, a woman who has not lost her joy of life, her faith, or her ability to see the world as better than it is, and who has been lovingly waiting for her grandson's return for twenty years. Her husband, part dreamer, part magician, and part adventurer with a good heart, creates for her a "game of reality" - a gentle illusion that is not a deception, but a tender art of making life more bearable, cheerful, and beautiful. Nothing that makes us happy is an illusion.
The play is full of humour, it moves the heart, yet it also makes us think about where we went wrong and how to put things right. It is a story brimming with joy, hope, and sparkling dialogue.
From November 2026, the new theatrical production of this celebrated play will feature Simona Stašová in the lead role - a part she has been waiting for many years to grow into.
