Helsinki: Affordable Housing for Diverse Urban Life
Talli Architects - Minna Lukander & Tiina Päivilä-Kari
Talli Architects focuses on architecture, interior design, and the stewardship of architectural heritage. The studio combines a sense of history with a forward-looking vision, designing sustainable architecture centered on the user.
The studio's story began in 1995 with the renovation of Lasipalatsi, a landmark of Finnish functionalist architecture. Originally intended as a temporary structure, the building had fallen into disrepair - its transformation into a new cinema and media center required the enthusiasm of a young team of architects.
Today, Talli specializes in building renovations and adaptive reuse, residential design, and educational and care environments for various age groups. Beyond public commissions, the studio develops its own housing concepts, and its work has been recognized in Finnish and international media.
On its 30th anniversary, Talli Architects is entering a new phase - in 2027 it will merge with fellow Helsinki studio A-Konsultit. The new office will remain an independent studio led by architects, strengthening its expertise while maintaining a shared commitment to quality, sustainable, and human-centered architecture.
Minna Lukander is an architect, CEO, and founding partner of Talli Architects, which celebrated 30 years in 2025. Beyond leading the studio, she is involved in design work and often serves as lead architect on demanding projects. She focuses on sustainable architecture, adaptive building conversions, residential housing, and educational and care environments. She is interested in the continuity of the built environment and spaces that are functional and meaningful for everyday life. She views architecture primarily as a relationship between people, places, and time.
Tiina Päivilä-Kari is an architect and partner at Talli Architects. She has served as lead architect and principal designer on numerous residential projects and renovations, including timber housing and urban infill projects. She is interested in developing sustainable and well-designed environments.
