Winternitzova vila, Prague

lecture culture

This lecture explores the phenomenon of cubism in architecture and its leading figures - Pavel Janák, Josef Gočár, Josef Chochol, and Vlastislav Hoffmann. The presentation examines the primacy of spiritual function over practical concerns, the close integration of architecture with applied arts, and rondocubism.

The lecture includes a tour of the villa's spaces and the current exhibition.

About the venue: Winternitzova vila

Winternitz Villa in Prague's Smíchov district is a functionalist building from 1931–1932, designed by Adolf Loos and Karel Lhota for lawyer Josef Winternitz. It was the last project completed during Loos's lifetime and is a listed cultural monument. Since 2017 the villa has been open to the public as a gallery, offering guided tours, exhibitions, a cultural programme, and experiential overnight stays.
