The Expulsion of Gerty Schnirch
HaDivadlo, Brno
"We've closed the book on it, history has processed it, so why keep returning to it?"
A dramatization of Kateřina Tučková's acclaimed novel follows the fate of Gerty Schnirch from a German-Czech family, whose life was shattered by historical events. The production specifically depicts the so-called Brno death march and raises questions about guilt, forgiveness, and understanding between Czechs and Germans.
The story shows events from the second half of the twentieth century from the perspective of a person who, based on political decisions, lost citizenship in the country where he was born — and died without forgiveness. The production contributes to public discourse on a topic that has been insufficiently reflected upon: the expulsion of Czech Germans.
The production won the Theatre Newspaper Award 2015 in the Drama Theatre category. Sara Venclovská was nominated for the Theatre Newspaper Award 2015 for her acting performance.
