Villa Quarter Walking Tour in Barrandov
Autobusová zastávka Filmové ateliéry Barrandov, Prague
A guided walking tour through the villa quarter in Barrandov, starting at the Filmové ateliéry bus stop and leading through the residential area to Barrandov Terraces. The tour lasts 1.5–2 hours.
Participants will learn about the origins of the Barrandov quarter, its film history, and its nickname "Hollywood of the East". The tour highlights the Havl brothers, Miloš and Václav Maria, who founded the quarter, and Joachim Barrande, after whom the entire quarter is named. In the heart of the villa quarter, the tour stops at exemplary villas and recalls notable residents, including the villa nicknamed "Indian ship". Specific examples showcase the work of architect Vladimír Gregr, who combined functionalist architecture with inspiration from Californian villas. The tour also discusses where Prague's first functionalist settlement was originally planned to be built and why it never happened. The walk concludes at Barrandov Terraces, where the guide will discuss their history, ongoing transformation, and future, as well as briefly covering the prefabricated housing estate from the 1980s and the tram line by Patrik Kotas.
