Architecture Day: Prague - House at the Black Madonna
Dům U Černé Matky Boží, Prague
A guided tour of the Cubist house and its interiors with guide and translator Kristina Václavů.
The House at the Black Madonna, built in 1912 to a design by Josef Gočár, is one of the most significant examples of Czech Cubist architecture and among the first Cubist buildings in Prague. The tour will take visitors through the history of what was originally a department store, its representative interiors including the iconic staircase, and spaces managed by the Museum of Decorative Arts up to the fifth floor.
The programme includes a permanent exhibition focused on living in Cubist interiors - emphasizing the comprehensive spatial concept and the integration of architecture with applied arts. Unique furniture pieces and complete interior ensembles will be presented, including Gočár's bedroom and study designed for actor Otto Boleška in 1913.
