Guided Tour of Znojmo's Medieval Fortifications

A guided tour with commentary presents the historical development of Znojmo's city fortifications and includes access to three towers. In the Powder Tower, named after gunpowder storage in the 18th century, visitors can explore the fortifications using a 3D model. The adjacent New Tower features an exhibition of period weapons that visitors can try on, and the tower roof offers views into the valley.

Znojmo's fortifications began when the city was founded before 1226 and were expanded over centuries with additional defensive walls. Due to its location on the Moravian-Austrian border, Znojmo was the most heavily fortified city between Vienna and Prague. After the Napoleonic Wars, gates were gradually demolished and walls sold to private owners; the outer fortification belt was replaced by tree-lined avenues (today's Municipal Park). The preserved sections of walls and towers underwent extensive reconstruction in recent years and were ceremonially opened in 2018.
