Žižkov is steeped in legends and myths - many had a grain of truth, though time has worn away their authenticity. The neighbourhood is working-class, unlike its patrician neighbours in the Royal Vineyards, and that is precisely what gives it its character. Local street names still recall the original estates that were replaced from the 1870s onwards by new residential blocks. Their inhabitants were mainly workers commuting to factories in Smíchov, Karlín, and Libeň.
Zižkov was filled with cinemas and pubs because of them, places that remain part of the local colour to this day. A walk through Lower Žižkov explores these themes - and more besides.
Meeting point: U Božích bojovníků street (perpendicular to Husitská).
