Vilém Wünsche

About

Vilém Wünsche (1900-1984) was a Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator from Šenov near Ostrava. Before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague he worked as a mine mechanic, and the mining world of the Ostrava region remained his lifelong subject - he painted miners at work and in everyday life. During World War II he was imprisoned in Auschwitz, and after his return he processed the experience in an expressive series of paintings. He was awarded the title of National Artist in 1983.

Vilém Wünsche - From the Life of a Miner

Vilém Wünsche's paintings capture the lives and labour of miners in industrial Ostrava. Fourteen previously unseen works from 1946–1949 are complemented by a children's section with illustrations and an interactive space.

This exhibition chronicles 250 years of Ostrava-Karviná mining history through photographs, artefacts, tools, and artworks. The centrepiece is a replica of the last coal cart from the ČSM Mine, marking the end of an era.
