Rudy Royston is an American jazz drummer born in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Denver, Colorado. After a decade teaching music in public schools, he moved to New York in 2006 to study jazz percussion at Rutgers University with Victor Lewis, and quickly became one of the most in-demand drummers on the contemporary scene. He has worked alongside Bill Frisell, Dave Douglas, JD Allen, Jason Moran and dozens of other leading jazz musicians, and has released five albums as a leader on Greenleaf Music.
Royston will perform on July 9, 2026 at the Umbria Jazz festival in Perugia, Italy.
Royston participated as a sideman on recordings released in 2026 on the labels Blue Note Records, Origin Records, Palmetto Records, and Sunnyside Records.
Royston recorded the album Keepers of the Eastern Door with Bill Frisell and Tony Scherr, released in 2025.
Royston participated as a drummer on the album Just When You Think You Know by saxophonist Brian Landrus, released on Posi-Tone Records.
Royston presented in April 2023 at Jazz Gallery in New York the album DAY, the fifth studio album by the band Flatbed Buggy on Greenleaf Music.
