Nirvana night: In Memory of Kurt Cobain + DJs
A tribute night to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain with DJs at Cargo Gallery.
Nirvana was an American rock band from Aberdeen, Washington, active from 1987 to 1994. Fronted by Kurt Cobain alongside bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, they became the defining act of the grunge movement and sold over 75 million records worldwide. Their 1991 album Nevermind - and its lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit - reshaped mainstream rock almost overnight. The band dissolved after Cobain's death in April 1994; Grohl went on to form Foo Fighters.
The Fender Mustang guitar from the Smells Like Teen Spirit music video was auctioned at Christie's in New York for 6,907,000 dollars and became the third most expensive guitar in auction history.
The Smells Like Teen Spirit music video surpassed 2 billion views on YouTube - as the first grunge era recording ever to do so.
The Los Angeles court definitively dismissed Spencer Elden's lawsuit regarding the Nevermind album cover; the judge ruled that the photograph does not meet the legal criteria of child pornography.
The single Smells Like Teen Spirit received diamond certification in the USA (10 million units sold) from the RIAA organization.
BBC broadcast the documentary film Kurt Cobain: Moments That Shook Music on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Cobain's death.
