Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter who fronted the grunge band Nirvana, whose 1991 album Nevermind rewrote rock history. His raw sound and alienated lyrics made him the defining voice of Generation X, even as he remained deeply ambivalent about the fame that came with it. He died on April 5, 1994, in Seattle at age 27; Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, in their first year of eligibility.
A new forensic report released in February 2026 claims that Cobain's death could have been a murder disguised as suicide - however, authorities continue to investigate his death as a suicide.
