Molière, born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673), was a French playwright, actor and poet widely regarded as the founder of modern French comedy. After thirteen years touring the French provinces, he returned to Paris in 1658 and secured the patronage of Louis XIV. His plays - Tartuffe, The Miser, The Misanthrope among them - skewer hypocrisy, religious fraud and human folly, and remain the most frequently performed works at the Comédie-Française to this day. French is often called "the language of Molière" in his honour.
