About

Dita Pepe (born 1973 in Ostrava) is a Czech photographer and lecturer at the Institute of Creative Photography, Silesian University in Opava. She is best known for her long-running series of staged self-portraits (1999-2014), in which she transformed herself into a double of women and men from widely different social backgrounds, always photographed in their own surroundings. Her work consistently probes identity, gender and social roles, treating photography as both communication and therapy. Her photographs are held in Czech and international collections, and she has exhibited from Paris to Johannesburg.

    Pepe exhibited at the 35th edition of the Month of Photography festival in Bratislava with the exhibition Something from Love (8. 11. - 4. 12. 2025) at the Czech Centre Gallery.

    In 2025, Pepe completed an artistic residency in Taiwan, where she created a series of self-portraits with local people; the exhibition was first presented in Hualien.

  • 2026

    The book About Japanese Girls won an award in the competition The Most Beautiful Czech Books of 2026 in the Bibliophilia category.

  • 2024

    In 2024, Pepe published the photographic publication 70. JFO for the anniversary of the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, with which she has long collaborated.

  • 2022

    The book Boundaries of Love (2021), the creative part of Pepe's doctoral dissertation at Tomas Bata University in Zlín, was nominated for the Magnesia Litera 2022 award.
