Kunín

About the venue

The baroque Kunín château near Nový Jičín was built between 1726 and 1734 by Viennese architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt for the Harrach family; its garden façade so closely resembles his Salzburg Mirabell that it is sometimes called the "little Moravian Mirabell". The château's golden age came under the enlightened Countess Marie Walburga of Truchsess-Waldburg-Zeil, who ran a progressive school here - its most famous pupil was the historian František Palacký. Looted after World War II and left to decay for decades, it was rescued from ruin in 1998 and is now managed by the Museum of the Novojičínsko Region. Visitors tour authentically furnished rooms, a portrait gallery, and an attic with a remarkable baroque chimney system.
