Čestmír Suška – Páteř
A monumental wooden installation by Čestmír Suška in the Žatec synagogue explores the boundaries between interior and exterior, between solid matter and its disruption.
The second-largest surviving synagogue in Bohemia was built in 1871-1872 in Moorish style to designs by Johann Staněk; its two distinctive towers were added in 1882. After being set on fire during Kristallnacht in 1938, the building fell into decades of disrepair. Daniel Černý bought it together with the adjacent rabbi's house in 2013 and, after extensive reconstruction, reopened it in March 2024 as a museum and cultural venue. The permanent exhibition covers the history of Žatec's Jewish community and is complemented by interactive elements and virtual reality.
