Divadlo Na Kovárně sits in the north wing of Poděbrady Castle - the name refers to a smithy that reportedly stood here as far back as the reign of King George of Poděbrady. The theatre was created in 1942 when a local amateur company converted part of the first castle courtyard from garages and storage into a stage. After an emergency closure in 1987 it underwent a full reconstruction, reopening in December 2000. The hall seats 220 and is fully accessible; it is run by the Městské kulturní centrum Poděbrady alongside the castle cinema.
