Hoofing Here, Hoofing There

  • Genre: Comedy · Drama · Psychological
  • Country: Československo
  • Runtime: 128 min

Karlovy Vary at the end of the 1980s. Three friends - Pepe, Milan and František - live an intense nightlife. While their days are filled with tedious, at times absurd work reality of late socialism, nights are devoted to decadence. Women of course must not be missing, and why shouldn't one spend a night with a friend's partner. But somewhere nearby lurks a virus causing a disease whose name everyone is afraid to speak and for which no cure yet exists. AIDS. The sharp, expressive directorial style of Věra Chytilová is complemented by the poetics of Divadlo Sklep, whose founders played the main roles in the film. Darkened grotesque connects the image of a society exhausted by empty slogans of the regime with a portrait of friendship that, faced with threat, disintegrates into cold egoism.
